Iconic Bill Cunningham famous for his street style in New York Times was once a milliner!
Cunningham designed under the label William J throughout the fifties and sixties. He apparently went by this name because his family did not like his chosen profession.
Today 23 of his hats went on sale through vintage seller Katy Kane on 1stdibs.com. She acquired these hats through one of Bill Cunningham's friends whose aunt Mitty was an avid collector of William J hats through the 50's and 60's however had decided to part with the creations.
Cunningham has said in past interviews that he earned enough money to pay the bills but not make a fortune. “Everything I did was a little too exotic — you know, for normal people," Cunningham said in a statement.
